How should house rules be written so guests actually follow them?
House rules that guests follow to the end do not end with “Don't” but with “Please do this”. A rule that gets followed contains three things: what (the rule), why (the reason), and what to do then (the alternative). Writing only “No indoor smoking” leaves guests wondering where to smoke, leading them to open the balcony window. “Smoking is prohibited indoors. Please use the ashtray to the left outside the building” leads to action. All 12 items in this tool are written in this format, so you just need to fill in the details.
House rules also serve as a reference when disputes arise. When handling refunds or compensation disputes regarding guest counts, smoking, noise, etc., platforms first check the house rules guests read before booking. Therefore, rules must be identical in both the Airbnb house rules section and the guide inside the accommodation. Translations must be prepared separately. Airbnb auto-translates messages, but house rules are shown in the language the host wrote them in. If guests can't read the rules, it is hard to be protected in a dispute. This tool translates your original into 5 guest languages (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese). If numbers or line breaks don't match the original, that sentence is left in the original. This prevents times and amounts from being mistranslated.
Entered content is processed only within your device's browser. Only sentences where you tap [Translate] are sent to the server and are not saved anywhere. Translations are limited to 10 times per hour per IP, and daily total provision has a cap.
- What needs to be included in Airbnb house rules?
- Include only things guests must agree to before booking. Headliners include guest count, smoking, pets, parties, quiet hours, and extra fees. Information needed after check-in, such as key locations or recycling methods, is best written in printouts inside the accommodation or on the guest guide page.
- Can I trust the translated sentences?
- Numbers and line breaks are checked automatically against the original, and any line that doesn't match is left in the original language. Still, take a quick look before printing. Currency and time formats in particular can vary by language.
- Is the entered content saved?
- We do not save it. Sentence completion happens only within your browser, and only the sentences you requested for translation are sent to the server. Content disappears when you close the page, so be sure to copy your completed sentences.
- What changes if I make a guest guide page?
- Your written house rules are organized into guide cards and delivered to guests via link or QR. Guests can view them in their own language without a separate sign-up, and if they ask questions, automatic answers are provided based on the written guide. It's free to use.
